Some pre workouts are super strong and in some cases would not be suitable for a beginner, intermediate or stimulant sensitive individual. Others will give you energy whilst also assisting with your recovery and elevate fat burning.

There are an endless selection of pre workouts available on the market today which can fulfill many a different need. These supplements contain components that give that intense motivation, concentration, strength and energy. By figuring out and understanding exactly what your goals are you will be able to find a pre workout to compliment and help you achieve your desired outcomes. It is to be noted though that pre workouts are for the more advanced trainer and are not recommended if you are just starting out. Looking beyond your goals - let's take a minute to consider how your body tolerates stimulants. Are you a big coffee drinker? Are energy drinks your "go to" when you're lacking energy? How do these drinks generally affect you? All these factors need to be considered when choosing the right pre workout supplement, if any!
Once you have managed to answer all these questions openly and honestly, you will be closer to identifying which, if any, pre workout is right for you. The choices at this point are fairly simple, Non/Low Stimulant Formula, a High Stimulant Formula or a Muscle Building Formula.
A Non/Low Stimulant based pre workout is primarily made up of smaller amounts of caffeine, amino acids and beta alanine. Some have added ingredients to achieve a pump whilst some can also include variations of arginine to increase blood flow to the muscles. These formulas are great for the novice trainer or particularly if you're sensitive to caffeine or stimulant based ingredients. They are perfect for giving you an energy kick as well as aiding in reducing the lactic acid burn during a workout while promoting muscle recovery and repair. Look out for formulas with none or low amounts of caffeine and a combination of beta alanine, creatine and amino acids, such as the branch chain amino acids leucine, valine and isoleucine. If you're an intermediate to advanced trainer and you're not sensitive to stimulants you may want to try a formula which consists of higher amounts of caffeine, creatine and amino acids. Many these days include the ingredients mentioned above but in higher quantities. Most formulas tend to have some vitamins and added minerals for energy support as well. Stimulant formulas tend to come in a small container and have a small serving size of around 5-10 gms. A good example of this is the Performax Labs Hypermax or Mr Hyde from Pro Supplements. They have no carbohydrates or fats and can also act as a fat burner because of the high amounts of caffeine and energy enhancing components they contain. These products give you a type of amped up energy with extreme focus that allows you to smash through intense workouts. These are also helpful during a cutting phase as stimulants are great for accessing body fat for energy. Make sure you add a BCAA formula to protect muscle tissue so you burn fat and not muscle.
Remember that stimulant based formulas tend to keep you awake, so if you train at night you may want to experiment with what works for you so you're not up all night tapping your foot. Also, keep in mind that pre workouts are not for kids - you should be over 18 to use any of these formulas and they should not be used by anyone who suffers from any type of heart complaint or illness. Alternatively there are muscle building pre workout formulas that are more about growth and recovery rather than the mega energy surge. Look for formulas that contain higher amounts of creatine, amino acids and carbohydrates. These work through the natural energy cycle using fast acting carbohydrates and creatine and are more geared to mass building, recovery and boosting strength. These are perfect for the mass building phase and also act as a perfect post workout recovery tool. Consider CellMass, Cell Tech or Recovery Stack. Take before and after training for best results. These are particularly good for power and massive strength and size increases.
If you do choose a higher stimulant product, consider adding an adrenal support product such as Go Healthy's Adrenal Support as an added support factor. Too many stimulants and the adrenals can take a real hammering leading to heavy fatigue - the opposite of what you were trying to achieve.
