What is sarcopenia?
Sarcopenia is a condition related to loss of muscle associated with ageing. This could be a gradual decline in muscle mass purely related to ageing due to reduced physical activity, and may also result from an injury or chronic disease that inhibits recovery back to full mobility. Issues associated with loss of muscle include a resulting loss of strength and stability that may increase risk of falls, leading to longer term issues that affect overall health and wellbeing.
What are some symptoms that may lead to muscle loss?
Symptoms may include;
Poor appetite or lack of interest in food
Eating only small amounts compared to normal
Swallowing impairment and poor oral health
Reduced senses (taste/smell) and reduced enjoyment from eating
Reduction in the overall consumption of food
Having a chronic illness such as respiratory or breathing disorders which require sufferers to eat more energy to maintain a healthy weight.
Why is a reduction of muscle loss a concern?
Gradual reduction in weight associated with reduction in muscle mass can impact on an individual’s ability to lead an active and happy life. Even from the age of 30 there will be a gradual reduction in muscle mass with ageing. For the older population (65+), maintaining weight and in turn muscle mass can not only help keep them active and healthy, but reduce instances of sickness and illness that may lead to more chronic conditions requiring medical intervention. By providing the body with sufficient energy, protein and essential vitamins and minerals through a balanced diet, individuals can help maintain their muscle mass and overall quality of life.
Why is Protein important?
Protein contains the building blocks to life. Proteins are made up of amino acids, 9 of which your body cannot make itself, so these be consumed in the diet in order for your body to function properly. Your body uses protein for growth and to build and repair tissues in the body. Proteins are also the building blocks for hormones, enzymes and other critical components in the body that are vital to remaining healthy. Protein is used to make bones, skin, hair, nails, blood, and importantly muscle, so ensuring you receive adequate protein daily will help your body maintain all the necessary functions that protein provides. Ensuring the diet contains adequate protein will help maintain skin integrity, which may help reduce the potential for damage or irritation associated with ageing. Adequate protein levels also play an important part in wound healing particularly after surgery, or in supporting slow or non-healing wounds such as ulcers etc.
How much protein do I need?
The amount of protein recommended daily differs depending on whether you are male or female, and increases for those aged 70+ years. Females: 19 – 70 years – 46g/day (0.75g protein per kg) 1. 70+ years – 57g/day (0.94g protein per kg) 1. Males: 19 – 70 years – 64g/day (0.84g protein per kg) 1. 70+ years – 81g/day (1.07g protein per kg) 1. 1Nutrient Reference Values for Australia and New Zealand – Including Recommended Dietary Intakes, 2005. Your individual protein requirements may vary and you should consult your health professional if unsure.
