Lecithin is a natural, fatty substance that’s an integral component of cell membranes. It’s comprised of various biochemicals including essential fatty acids, as well as phospholipids and phosphatides such as phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl serine. Phosphatidyl choline is a major component of the brain and nervous system.
As lecithin helps breakdown fats and cholesterol, this keeps these substances moving rather than accumulating on artery walls. The main ingredient, lipoproteins are mainly responsible for this action. Lecithin also helps support nervous system, heart and kidneys.
It may help treat liver damage and protect against toxins. Phosphatidy choline supports the liver, particularly for people who have non-alcoholic fatty disease.
Research has shown support for brain disorders such as dementia, Alzheimer’s and depression. Choline increases the production of acetylcholine in the brain and transmits nerve impulses.
