Hey there, how's it going?
Today I want to talk to you about something that's easy to overlook in the world of supplements,
something that seems basic.
Maybe even boring, multivitamins.
The thing that probably said in your parents' cupboard, nicks to the expired penadole and
some dusty old band aids.
But here's the thing, multivitamins might be one of the most underrated supplements on
the shelf.
They don't promise six-pack ads or laser focus, but they do something even more important.
They cover the gaps.
And today I want to break down why that matters.
No hype, no fluff, just three big reasons I take multivitamin every single day and why
you might want to as well.
So, let's start with the most obvious reason.
Deficiency.
If you're missing something your body needs, that has a cost.
Maybe it's not dramatic, but it is still there.
Now, let's talk some numbers.
In New Zealand, a 2022 Ministry of Health reports showed that over 40% of adults don't
meet the recommended daily intake of key micronutrients.
That's including calcium, magnesium, and vitamin A.
That is not a fringe issue, that's nearly half the adult population walking around with
meaningful nutritional gaps.
Here's another one.
According to the New Zealand adult nutrition survey, 14% of adult women have low vitamin
B12 levels, especially those over 50 or following a vegetarian diet.
And again, vitamin D.
Research from the University of Auckland found that up to 57 of Maori and Pacific adults
have insufficient vitamin D levels in winter.
Why?
It's low sun exposure, darker skin pigmentation, and lifestyle factors all play a role.
So, even if you're eating okay, going outside and doing your best, you still might be running
on half full tank.
Sometimes a multivitamin is in a luxury, it's just covering your bases.
Then there's iodine, selenium, magnesium, even if you eat well, soil depletion, modern farming
practices, and stress can drain your reserves.
So, what does a multivitamin do?
It tops up your base levels, it's not a meagodose, it's not a hack.
It's just insurance, nutritional backup for the basics.
And I'll be real with you, I'd rather spend 50 cents or a dollar a day on peace of mind
and risk running on empty.
So, let's say you're not deficient, you're eating all right, you've got some greens, maybe
a smoothie here and there.
Cool, but here's the next question, are you actually getting everything you need every
day for food alone?
Let's be honest, modern life is not set up for nutrient density.
We're on the go, we skip meals, we microwave dinner, scurroletics arc, and drink three coffees
before noon.
And if you're training hard, I'm distressed, working night shifts, fasting, or vegan, you've got
higher nutritional demands.
This is where a multivitamin comes a buffer.
It fills little gaps, the trace minerals, the odd days you miss a meal, the big complex
that gets burned through undistress.
